Coach Vetting & Safeguarding Checklist

Start with a friendly welcome and make it clear safeguarding of children and young adults is central to the club, in line with expectations from the Football Association Wales
Cover basics like DBS checks, emergency contacts, and the code of conduct so they’re ready to coach safely
Give a simple safeguarding brief: keep appropriate boundaries (no private 1:1s, appropriate communication only)
Highlight signs to watch for (changes in behaviour, anything that doesn’t feel right)
Be clear on action: don’t investigate - report concerns, and point them to the club’s lead safeguarding officer
Use a couple of quick real-life scenarios to make it practical
Explain club routines (pick-up/drop-off, communication channels, social media, photos, changing rooms)
Reinforce an open culture where they can always ask if unsure
Do a quick follow-up after their first sessions to check in and support them
